Did you know John Adams, back in 1798 wanted measures similar to this, and even signed a law? Back then he and his fellow buddies wanted to completely deny citizenship for anyone who is not born here in the united states, when in fact many in his generation are actually born in England. Hypocrisy was alive and well then, it is now.
Here is a little bit of history:
Signed into law by then President John Adams in 1798, the Alien and Sedition Acts consisted of four laws passed by the Federalist-controlled Congress as America prepared for war with France. These acts increased the residency requirement for American citizenship from five to fourteen years, authorized the president to imprison or deport aliens considered “dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States” and restricted speech critical of the government. These laws were designed to silence and weaken the Democratic-Republican Party. Negative reaction to the Alien and Sedition Acts helped contribute to the Democratic-Republican victory in the 1800 elections. Congress repealed the Naturalization Act in 1802, while the other acts were allowed to expire.
Fast Forward couple of centuries, it doesn’t seem like we got rid of such people, or at the very least such attitudes. How ironic it is for the conservative party to argue for family values, when all they try to do is tear families apart? All because the color of their skin is brown.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told The Hill on Monday that Congress “ought to take a look at” changing the 14th Amendment, which gives the children of illegal immigrants a right to U.S. citizenship. In an interview, McConnell said the 14th Amendment provision should be reconsidered in light of the country’s immigration problem.
“I haven’t made a final decision about it, but that’s something that we clearly need to look at. Regardless of how you feel about the various aspects of immigration reform, I don’t think anybody thinks that’s something they’re comfortable with.”
Kyl said in a CBS interview, “There is a constitutional provision in the 14th Amendment that has been interpreted to provide that, if you are born in the United States, you are a citizen no matter what. … And so the question is, if both parents are here illegally, should there be a reward for their illegal behavior?”
Hmm. Millions of Americans, whose ONLY home is The United States of America, will be affected if this nonsense ever becomes a reality. The problem is that they will have no place to go. The countries where their parents are from won’t take them for obvious reasons. Maybe Kyl will come up with a plan to fund NASA and send them on test missions to the planet Mars.
Sounds like a no brainer to me.
Update - Even former presidential candidate John McCain supports this idea now. Is this what a true maverick looks like?
